National Traffic Awareness Month: Back-to-School Safety Tips
Kim Leach

As August rolls in, families everywhere prepare for the back-to-school rush. The hustle and bustle of school supply shopping, adjusting to new schedules, and the excitement of the first day back bring both joy and a hint of stress to many households. It’s a time of transition, not just for students, but for the community at large. National Traffic Awareness Month is perfectly timed to remind us of the increased traffic congestion and the importance of road safety during this period.

Kids on the Move

  • With schools reopening, there will be a noticeable increase in kids crossing streets or biking to school. This is particularly true in residential areas and around school zones. Drivers, stay alert and watch for young pedestrians.

School Bus Safety

  • School buses are back on their routes, making frequent stops. It's crucial to be vigilant when driving near these buses and to adhere strictly to stop sign laws. Stopping when a school bus displays its stop sign isn’t just courteous—it’s the law and it saves lives.

Navigating School Zones

  • During drop-off and pick-up times, school zones and parking lots can become chaotic and congested. Exercise patience and remain alert to ensure the safety of all in these areas.

Student Drivers Ahead

  • Many student drivers will be hitting the roads, some for the first time. Give them extra space and show understanding, as they are still gaining confidence and navigating the rules of the road.

Safety Talks for Families

  • Parents, take the time to talk to your children about walking and biking safely. Encourage the use of crosswalks, always wearing a helmet, and avoiding distractions from phones or devices while on the move.

Making a few small adjustments in our daily routines can significantly enhance road safety during this high-traffic season. Remember, safety is a shared responsibility. By leading with mindfulness and care, we set an example that resonantly echoes within our communities. Let’s prioritize safety as we make our way through the vibrant back-to-school month of August.
